Troika Ranch

I think this site is a good illustration of hierarchy and shape.  The hierarchy of information is well established in that the first thing the eye is drawn to is the image on the right then to the left of the screen for the navigation.  The shape of the navigation also implies a bit of hierarchy in that the receding sizes of the navigational options implies that this company thinks the company and its' work is more important and that contact details, while logistically important, aren't as creatively important. The shape of the navigation items are also interesting in that they are unique while also being easy to use.

The Gagosian Gallery site is a good example of unity and variety as well as white space.  Unity and variety is demonstrated in the thumbnails for their various exhibition sites, giving us an idea of the different works presented while sizing the images within a range to identify that Gagosian is the one presenting these varied works, as opposed to how the works might be more prominenly displayed on the artist's personal websites.  The site designer also creates a "gallery" type feel with the use of ample white space between images and navigation.  These choices makes for an attractive, functional site that doesn't interfere with a user's visit to the site and accessing images and information.

Lab 2

napoleansmarchtufte.jpg

The graphical representation of Napolean's March, by Edward Tufte is a very profound use of line and space.  The wide line starting from the left of the image (aka Paris) decreases as it proceeds to the right of the page finishing at a point (aka Moscow).  The decreasing width of the line indicates Napolean's troop losses as he marched to Moscow.  The line returning from Moscow on the right to Paris on the left continues to decrease in width, indicating the profound loss of French troops.  The overall circular shape of the line also indicates the hopeful beginning, failing middle, and sad end of an important historical event.  While the graph includes more historical detail, the notion that the bulk of a complex story can be reduced to one jagged line is humbling.
